I have a brick fireplace, can I cover the brick with slate tile?

If so, what would be a good estimate to have the fireplace and my bar space in my kitchen done.

slate most definately can be installed over brick.  i recommend a multiflex thinset, like ultraflex II from lowes, to guarantee proper adhesion in an area prone to heat.  most installers in my area of florida charge by the square foot, but something like a fireplace or bar would either be charged by the hour or by the job since there isn't much footage.  believe it or not, sometimes something small like a fireplace can take just as long to install as your kitchen floor.  

a good estimate would range between $150-$300 since i haven't physically seen the areas to be tiled.  it may be more or may be less, but that should be a good range for you to go by.  if you are looking for a good reputable tile installer, try asking at your local tile distributor.  they generally keep a list of a few tile installers that they recommend, and you can ask 2-3 to come out and give you an estimate.  good luck!

I think that would be a terrific way to modernize it. I particularly like slate laid with no grout lines. I bought a bunch of slate for 2 fireplace in our showroom from Lowes and they were about $2 per piece. I sorted through the boxes and seperated the colorful ones with reds and oranges and golds. It turned out great!
