Ok heres the scoop.. he bought kind of a beater truck and only had minimum coverage.. no collision or anything.. anyway.. it was parked on the street just outside of his apartment and it was struck by another vehicle. the guy who hit his truck fled the scene.. so it was a hit and run.. there was an investigation and the owner of the truck claims that his truck was stolen at the time of the accident, so his insurance will not cover it. my buddy is sure that is a load of bs. anyway.. it apparently went to court and my buddy was never notified...since the owner of the truck claims it was stolen no charges are layed.. my buddy now has to pay $1500 impound fees on top of damages.. and he only as a certain lenth of time to pay or the DMV can actually suspend the registration on his other vehicle.. this doesnt seem fair as he was inside his apartment sleeping when this all went down.. was never informed it even went to court and now he's stuck having to pay all the damages and impound fees?

  1. Unfortunately that sometimes happens when you don't have collision on your vehicle.  By not having it, you're saying "I'll pay for anything that happens that isn't immediately chargeable to someone else".

Why did he leave it in impound until the fees were that high?

  2. You're correct, it's not fair. The person who stole the other person's vehicle should be held accountable.

But your friend is also responsible for his own property and it's too bad in this situation. $1500 in towing/storage fees means he just left it there and did not pay to get it out right away as he should have. If he had, it would have been about $200.
