  1. 1 - no idea

2 - not the best - thats McGill

    3 - 1867

4 - scads, but not major ones.  Nothing I would think you would need to stress over

5 - different provinces charge different premiums - some charge none.  Not sure about Ontario

6- go for a credit union

    7 - Telus or Rogers

    8 - craigslist

  2. the official government website for immigrating to Canada is http://www.cic.gc.ca/

the most likely route in, if you dont have immediate family already here who can sponsor you is through the "skilled employee" section. There is an on line test there to take to see if you qualify (its a point system and you need 67 points to qualify)

Yes UofT is an excellent medical school as is McGill, UofA in Edmonton and UBC in vancouver.

Independence was in stages. ..Canada initially confederated in 1867,  began to chart our own foreign policy in the 1920s and citizenship as a Canadian seperate from commonwealth began in 1940s.  The final act.. where all laws and powers reside in Canada and not the UK was formalized in the early 1980s.  The Queen still remains as the figurehead top of government but of course she has no real power.

Odd laws;  not really.. if your from the US you'll find things pretty similar.   Gun control stricter and drug laws a little less so.  No death penalty since 1975

Government healthcare is run by each province. Some charge nothing at all per month for coverage whereas others charge a nominal fee $50-$80/month for coverage.  You can also obtain extra private insurance like blue cross which covers things the basic healthcare doesnt like glasses, dental, drug prescriptions, etc..

Canada has several big chartered banks more or less the same... Royal Bank of Canada is the largest and personally find them very good.

Cell phones;  three big carriers here are Rogers, Telus and Fido.  All have a range of plans.  You can also "pay as you go" that is you just buy minutes on a card as buy as you need.

    Job listings in Toronto area;

    try http://www.monster.ca

    or http://regionalhelpwanted.com/toronto-jo...

    good luck to you.

  3. 1.  Well, it is not easy.  It really depends on how you plan to do it?  Family class, skilled worker class....?  It actually took me almost 4 years from start to finish.  Average is about 1 to 2 years.  You will have to pass a medical exam, a criminal record check and go through an extensive application.  If coming as a skilled worker you will need to get offered employment BEFORE you enter Canada.

    2.  Good yes, excellent no.

    3.  The Dominion of Canada was established in 1867 which gave Canada rights of self-government.

    4. different laws about recycling and environment that an American would not be used to.  Tons of others-too numerous to list

5.It is funded by tax. It depends on where you live and where you work.  Some government employees pay nothing.  Some provinces have monthly premiums, some do not.  We live in Alberta.  My husband pays nothing (government employee) and it is 22$/month apiece for myself and our son.  We also have a supplemental health insurance.  The provincial health care is basically like Medicare.  You really need extra coverage for prescriptions, optical, dental etc.  We pay for this too although it is cheaper than anything you would find in the US.

    6.  It depends on where you live.    I'm not really familiar with banks in Ontario.

    7. Rogers

    8.  use the internet.  workingincanada.com
