I have a bush in my front yard, and we've noticed lots of areas that looked like dead brush. Upon looking more closely, they're filled with caterpillars. What could you tell me about these caterpillars, and what insect they'll grow into. I'll have pictures when I get them.

  1. i think it's called a bagworm moth :)

  2. It's an Evergreen Bagworm, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis, commonly known as bagworm, eastern or common bagworm. It will spin a cocoon its' entire life as a caterpillar, decorating it with pieces of plant material from the trees and/ or shrubs that it's feeding on.

The adult males have a thin black body and clear wings. The adult females retain the caterpillar appearance.

For more on the moths' interesting and somewhat complex lifecycle please see the links below.

  3. That is one ugly caterpillar, i think that is going to turn into a moth. but i am not certain.

  4. Gypsy moth maybe. Butterflies and moths always plant their young on whatever plant their babies will eat, so these caterpillars will be eating your bush. Gypsy moths are quite common also, so they're your best bet.
