I have a car window issue?

I drive a 99 Grand Am and tonight my rear passenger window went down fine but it made a creaking sound as I went to put it up (automatic windows). It wouldnt go back up all the way! I had to get out of my car and manually push it back up and after awhile, I got it up. But now it wont go back down. With the exception of just a small little corner it is completely sealed up. Do you think this is something I should fix or just forget about it because I hardly ever drive with my windows down? Maybe just get it sealed up in case? Just some advice. Thanks!

  1. You have a bad window regulator. If you don't wish to stick the money in it, have someone prop it into position, don't glue it or you will wreck seals and the value of the car

  2. Sounds like there is a problem with the regulator. It's an easy fix in most cases. I would get it fixed. Your car is new enough to make it worth taking care of.

  3. Regulator or power window motor.  In either case the door panel will have to be removed and some factory rivets drilled out.

Either problem will take around 2-3 hours flat rate at a shop.  After cost of the part (a premium price at a dealership) and $75 an hour labor, you're looking (at most) at about a $250-$300 repair at a dealership.

Ma & Pa shops will charge a bit less, but a friend, some curse words, a toolset, and a case of beer will get it fixed for around $100.

  4. window motor is dying or dead, pita to replace but motor cost about $60
