My carpet in my bathroom was once pink and when we moved in it was a little black by the standup shower but i didnt think anything of it, as we've been living here we have noticed that the rug doest dry and it turning more black and has a horrible odor to it. there is no windows or vent in our bathroom which make the smell worse, I informed the landord and all he did was steam cleaned it and it didnt do anything (come on who has a rug in a bathroom?) Well the bathroom smells horrible and he won't do anything and it is causing me to have headaces due to the smell i'm pretty sure that the floor under the rug is all mold... and is making the rug turn colors. what can i do about this and what effects of the mold and smell have towards my health?

  1. you need that rug out,it is filling with black mold and it is dangerous to breath, perhaps remove it and replace with vinyl flooring,it will eventually rot the floor.............tom

  2. the bad smell may not come from your rug it may come from your shower drain which may no have U-trap, you rug may get wet not realize that you somehow get it wet and cause it to get mold.

  3. Mold is a serious problem. I work for an apartment management company and when mold is even mentioned it gets full attention! If he refuses to do something about it stop paying your rent...seriously! Instead of giving it to him put it in a seperate bank account (dont spend it) call a lawyer and explain your situation, he'll look at you like you just handed him a million dollars! Take pictures and videos to document the situation. When you go to court the judge is going to see the neglect and make your landlord fix it, most likely you will be allowed to keep the rent money you have been holding in escrow and possibly be able to stay there rent free during the repairs as well! He may even have to pay to put you up in a hotel. Mold spores are nothing to play with, it can cause major problems with your respritory system as well as other health concerns. Ive had countless hours of schooling every year through my company on this issue as well as lead paint, trust me, you want to take this seriously.

  4. can you say, "health department"??

  5. Carpet for bathroom is never a good idea

hard to clean, and odor will never go away, i suggest you change it to hardwood, or tile.

  6. pull up the rug and get rid of it then make a good hot bucket of( strong ) bleach water and clean the whole floor and shower and all then depending on the type of floor you have you can just tile it other wise just ask your local hardware store what would be best for your type of floor just make sure the floor is good and clean and that the mold is not regrowing then you need to find out why the floor is getting wet in the first place and fix that then just deduct the amount you spent from your rent and send the balance just keep your recepts and make a note of what they are for and before and after pictures are really a good idea
