swing set is about 10 years old. Not sure if stain will repel bees by itself or if I need to do anything else.

  1. fresh paint or varnish usually works for carpenter bees trying to nest, stain alone usually not. Guessing you have paper wasps gathering wood to nest elsewhere, if that is the case the stain may work. might as well try the cheapest solution.  Any general insecticide will probably work all the same and they will be less toxic than most stains.

  2. I've heard that essential oils diluted in witch hazel and glycerin make for a good natural repellent against bees and wasps. Try it and see if it works.

  3. I would just use some Thompson water seal. Years ago I use to use old used motor oil mixed with some diesel fuel. It made a great stain sealer for a cheap price...of course at today's diesel prices it may be cheaper to buy the better water sealer.
