Where did the term 'check' and 'check mate' derive from. What did they originally mean. If you could answer this for me that would be appreciated.

  1. It means "The King is Dead" from the Persian "Shah Mat"

here is an interesting article about chess and the names of the pieces and how they came to be.

  2. ummm in russian they call it shah mat

  3. The Term checkmate comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat". Which means literally "the King is ambushed"

the word check is from the Persian "Shah", which means King, and is used to warn your opponent and direct is attention to the King.

its OK but keep in mind that in new rules of chess no need of calling 'check' and 'check mate' bcz it seems to b humiliation of opponent.
