  1. sweetlatina1272, I love the personality of a chow chow. They are so sweet.

  2. Are you kidding me ? Drug a dog so that you can bath her ? Do you even know that Benedryl is an actual DRUG ? Do you know that dogs can DIE if they are over dosed with Benedryl ?

Defenestration (Benedryl) is an antihistamine. It is used for the treatment of allergies and atopy, primarily to stop itching. (Atopy is an allergy to something that is inhaled, such as pollen or house dust; also called 'inhalant allergy.') It may also be used to control vomiting and motion sickness, as a mild sedative, and to treat muscle tremors due to certain toxins or medications. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences sleepiness, agitation, a rapid heart beat, depressed respiration, an inability to urinate, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite while being treated with diphenhydramine.

People that tell you to give your dogs a drug for ' bathing and shaving ' without knowing your dog's history, knowing how big your dog is, or anything else are negligent. They have no business prescribing medication over the internet to other people's dogs. It is a drug!

  3. No it is NOT 'safe'.  Nor should it be necessary.  I suggest a professional groomer.  Ever hear of antihistimine poisoning?  Diphenhydramine is the active drug in Benedryl.  Look here:

  4. if you are going to give your  benadryl (which i suggest you don't)  ask your dogs vet first.  If you can't bathe her, take her to the grommers.

  5. No.

    1)  Unless she is horribly matted, shaving a Chow is not a good idea; their double coats serve as insulation to keep them cool in the heat and warm in the cold.

    2)  Try paying a professional groomer to bathe her and show you how you can do it yourself

    3)  Never medicate a dog without your vet's advice, especially when it comes to human medicine

  6. It will probably take a lot more than that. Ask your vet forsomething.

  7. If you have a chow that is so matted you need to shave her, then you need to take her to a professional groomer. They are used to difficult dogs. See if your vet has a grooming service and bring her there.

If she is not horribly matted, then why are you shaving her? It isn't a good idea.

Bring her to a groomer and then start de-sensitizing her to the tub so you can eventually bathe her yourself.

  8. Yes. Benadryl is perfectly fine to give to dogs. Give her one 25mg pill, and see how she does. You can give her up to two. Hopefully she will get sleepy! :) Good Luck

  9. No! Her hair not only protects her from the cold, but it is also good insulation from the heat. Your heart is in the right place, but don't do it!

If she needs a bath, you can always take her to a groomer who has the equipment to get it done and get her dry. Unless she has rolled in something icky, she should only need to be bathed 2-3 times a year.

    Good luck!

  10. try to reward her with food treats so that she realizes that baths are a source of treats

    good luck

  11. No - NEVER give your dog Benadryl or anything else that hasn't been prescribed by your Vet.

If you cannot bathe her yourself, then take her to a professional groomer who is experienced in grooming difficult dogs.

  12. No! You go to a professional groomer and let them shave/bathe her! Don't shave her of her beautiful coat unless she is severly matted.
