why do you get more mucus when you have a cold and is it bad to swallow? It seems like no matter how much I blow my nose, it won't go away! I can't seem to find the answer anywhere, and I would like serious answers please!

  1. blow dot swollow. swollowing can cause chronic bronchitis wich i got and your have more mucus then and so much you VOMIT it up with blood . for the sake of health and sanity blow your nose instead of getting throut and chest infections like i did.

  2. We produce more mucus while we have a cold to protect the mucus membranes and to clean out any possible irritants. It's not "bad' to swallow but it can cause a pretty nasty cough at the end of the cold. It is best to take nasal decongestants to keep the mucus thin and flowing. Once it gets thick down into throat and lungs it is good to take mucinex to thin out that mucus. Hope you feel better soon!

  3. Mucus is your best friend when you have a cold.  It carries a great deal of immune system cells, and it keeps the germs from going deeper into your system.  It's uncomfortable, and one may be tempted to take an anti-histamine to dry the mucus up.  But try and live with it, and your cold will be less severe and go away quicker.  It's ok to swallow it, but preferable to spit/ blow it out.
