I have the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ version and more detail on its specs are at:

I have upgraded the RAM to 1.5 gig and have a decent graphics card in it (forget what it is now, bought it 6 months ago!).

My next step is to upgrade the CPU but I have no idea what speed I can go up to so would like some advice.

  1. you're going to need the model number of the motherboard to see whats its capable of supporting.

    by either:

1 opening the case and looking for the model (can be rather difficult with oem systems)

    or

2 download cpu-z (search google) and run the program and it will tell you.

get that information and go to that manufacturers site, hopefully its there and that information will be provided to you.  You may also have to update the bios for it to support better.

  2. Run a tool called CPU-Z (Search for it in Google) and find out what the socket is. There are 3 different sockets (754, 939, or AM2).

If it is a socket 754, then I think you will be out of luck, those are just way too old to upgrade, but I think they make a 3500+ but not sure anymore. That was many moons ago.

If it is a Socket 939, then the fastest you can get is a AMD Athlon 64 x2 4600+. You will probably not be able to buy this at retailers or even online tech stores. Your best bet is used so search ebay or amazon.

Last but not least, if your socket is a Socket AM2, then you can get a AMD Athlon 6400 x2 6000+. These are around a year old and you can find them in most online stores (newegg, mwave, compusa, tigerdirect)

    Good luck!

  3. contact me on my 360 profile with motherboard details, i will then tell you what you need.
