I have a complicated question on moving in the military, can you help?

Or maybe suggest someone, or a helpline who can?

Here's the deal, we are stationed in Maine now. My husband is due to leave on deployment to Bahrain Dec 15, and will return June 15th. He gets out of the military at the end of June 09, right after he gets back from Bahrain.

I know that when you get out of the military, they will move your things back home, or pay for at least that distance, but instead of going to Missouri, where we came from, he wants to go to Texas. My question is, will they cover the cost of the move before he leaves? I really don't want to stay up here all by myself when he's gone. I would like to stay in Missouri for the six months, and then when he gets out after he returns, go on to Texas with him.

Will the military pay to have our things sent to Missouri BEFORE deployment? Or if I do it myself, will they reimburse me for the move when he officially gets out? B/C then all we'd have to do is pay to move our things to Texas.

If they won't do that... Can I put my things in a military storage facility for the 6 months, Drive to Missouri, and then, when he gets out they can ship it directly to Texas and we pay for the over-mileage?

How exactly does that work?

Thanks!

  1. You really, really need to speak to your local transportation office and bring these issues up with them. I can quote from regulations to you all day long but a the end of that day what really matters is the local policies of your supporting unit.

A few things to consider... where is his home of record? The military will only pay to ship the items as far as his HOR is. Any further and its straight out of your pocket.

I know a few things for sure, regardless of their policy... they WILL put your stuff into storage while he is gone... for sure. And they will ship it, at the end of the deployment (and upon his ETS), wherever you want it to be shipped.. as long as its no furrther than his home of record.

  2. They will pay to move your stuff to his home of record when he gets out and not before then.  If where you want to go is closer mileage wise than his home of record you will be fine.  If it is farther you will need to pay the difference if you do a full household goods move.  HE should be able to put your belongings in storage since he has orders overseas but that will have to be in Maine.  He will need to go to the household goods office on base with his orders to Bahrain to get the paperwork on that.  The household goods office should be able to help with any other questions as well.  Also you will have to work out how much you get paid for BAH as well if you move from where you are at and he will need to update his Page 2 and SGLI forms with your new address.  If he does get killed and those two documents have the wrong address it will make things very hard to get straight.  Bahrain is a pretty safe place but the gulf isn't.  Good luck.

  3. The way things work with government reimbursement is that you shell out the money and then you are reimbursed. The government MAY pay to have your things sent to Texas if the cost is comparable or less than the cost to have them sent to Missouri. However, they will not send them to Missouri and then on to Texas. You have to pick a spot.

  4. You and your husband need to make an appointment at the Traffic Management Office (TMO) or whatever they call it where you are and get the straight skinny from them.

  5. AS A MILITARY WIFE YOU SHOULD KNOW NOT TO GIVE OUT DEPLOYMENT DATES OR WHERE HE IS BEING DEPLOYED TO ON THE INTERNET!!

ITS A DEAD GIVE AWAY FOR TERRORISTS ON THE INTERNET!

IF I WAS ONE ... YOU JUST GAVE ME ALL OF THE INFORMATION I WOULD NEED.

THINK BEFORE YOU GIVE OUT INFORMATION LIKE THAT.. THAT WAS STUPID.

    OPSEC!!!!

Hey Hryl.... Not every deployment is public information!

Maybe thats how c**p works in the Army, but either way .. you do not give that c**p out on the internet.

Your husband can get into a butt load of trouble for you handing that information out. At least in the Marine Corps he can.

TMO will only move your belongings if your husband is PCSing... Or when he gets out. They just dont move you back home whenever you feel like it. Your husband is military not you.. why would they only move you just because he deploys?

If you want to go back home it will be out of your pocket not the militarys. If you move your stuff to missouri, they wont move it to texas when he gets out...  that also would be out of your pocket. Because Missouri isnt where he is stationed. They'll move it from where he lived once he got out of bootcamp to his station , from one station to the next or from station to where he wants to live when he gets out. But nothing in between.

If I moved my stuff to california and my husband wasnt stationed there i wouldnt expect the military to move it.. its not his duty station.

    No they wouldnt reimburse you.

Yes you can put your things into storage and then when he gets back to his base ... arrange for his/your things to be moved to texas.

    Good luck hun!!!!

My hubby is deploying soon too.. im staying at the base and just driving to missouri (my home state too) a couple times while hes gone.

  6. devil cat is wacked if terrorist wanted to find out info its on tv here everyday at ft sill /lawton tv they show all the deloyments were thousands of troops are deployed give here a break and thank your husband for his serving our country ps my son is also deployed over in iraq  we wish all a safe return to devilcat stop being so paranoid

  7. You could talk to your PPO/HHGO but I'm willing to bet they will not cover  the move until you/he has hard orders in hand.  That's the way the military works.

Oh, and OPSEC is a concern.  I'd edit out even the months just to be safe.  But then I like to err on the side of caution.

  8. hi shara, my son is in the army at the moment and i would have thought they will send your thing for you i don,t think you will have a problem.
