  1. Play it safe and order a beam if that's what you are looking for. These guys know there wood and know what you can build with, ask them if you can, but there are things to consider like knots, grain, 5/4 type of wood. moisture and so on, If you slap some boards together then you get a slap together job,Take the time to Do it right!

  2. yes u can , IF u can install vertical kickers down from the beam to a load bearing wall or load bearing joist or header below, every 6-8 ft apart....if not then ur roof WILL sag....u can get an LVL that will span that with ease..about $ 10.00 per ft.......

  3. USA   At the splice you need to overlap the 2 x 12s at least two feet.  Then, you will need to install the metal splice plates and nail them in.  It would also be wise to bolt the sections together with 1/2" bolts, as stated earlier, but I would use no less than eight.  Refer to the local municipal building code regarding splicing and supporting the splice.  You very well might have to provide direct support below the splice all the way to a foundation wall or slab.

  4. I wouldn't but if you are determined, here is my take on it.  Make the sandwich adequate.  Use bolts to bolt the sandwich together, at least 1/2 bolts.  4 per sandwich should be adequate.  Can you support them in the middle somewhere from the bottom?
