I am planning to go to Amsterdam and I need to know a couple of things

1: How much will $1 get me in euros?

2. How expensive are things in euros? For instance how much would a shirt be? How much would a meal be? How much would a car be?

3. Would it be easier for me to get euros in the Us or in Amsterdam? Or does it matter? Thank you

  1. 1) 100 euros are 120 $

    2) Shoping from normal shops will be arount 15 to 20 euros a shirt.. renting a car will be around 60 euros a day. a macdonalds meal will be for 6euros and a normal snack will be around 4 euros.

    3) In the U.S it will be more expensive to buy, but in Europe or Amsterdam will be cheapier.

  2. I think the Euro is now worth about $1.60.

How much a shirt or any other consumer item costs depends on the type of shop you buy it in. Posh shops price items higher. The same goes for restaurants.

Don't get a car in Amsterdam, are you nuts? Much much easier and cheaper to use the public transport system. Everybody does. Parking is prohibitively expensive. You might find it useful to invest in a bicycle, though.

What you can do about accessing your money is bring either a Visa credit card and get cash out with it on the ATMs, or check with your bank to see if your normal ATM card can be used in the ATMs in the Netherlands to access funds in Euros which is then debited from your bank account at home. But by all means bring over about 100 Euros or so for convenience sake.

  3. One dollar will get you about sixty-three Euro cents right now, unless it's changed since Friday.

On Number two it all depends where you go,  if you're in Amsterdam we went there in November and spent only maybe 400 Euroes the entire time, you don't need a car there really and McDonalds is on every street for a meal at 5 Euro tops! The souveniers are pricier when you consider the exchange rate but that place is worth it. Steer clear of the pancake houses, 14 Euroes for a crepe? I don't think so!

I think getting it in the US will work because you know upfront what you're doing, although we just used ATMs when we were there.

I hope you have an awesome trip!!!

  4. 1.  Right now it's about $1.60 per euro, so $1 will only get you about 60 euro cents.

    2.  Things tend to be kind of expensive - haven't been specifically to Amsterdam but expect a typical cotton tee to be between 5 and 10 euros.  A meal:  at a sit-down restaurant, probably 10-20 euros, but fast food is more like 2-6.  A car - sorry, no idea.  Good rule of thumb - most things have price tags that are the same as in the U.S., but it's euros instead of dollars!  (i.e. a burger you'd pay $4 for is 4 euros in Europe)

    3.  It's easiest to exchange money when abroad.  Just bring a credit/debit card, find an ATM (not a currency exchange) and get the cash you need.  They tend to give good exchange rates and charge about 5 euro per transaction, so get a relatively large amount of cash at a time (200-300 euro) and stow it safely until you need it.
