  1. 1. Every Australian citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote. Voting is compulsory in Australian elections.

    2. No, we have no political prisoners.

    3. We have  free, secular and democratically elected governments in all states, territories and the Commonwealth of Australia.

    4. Our current Prime Minister is Kevin Rudd. He is the parliamentary leader of the Australian Labor Party which swept to power in a landslide win of the majority of seats in the House of Representatives in our Federal election late last year.

    5. Australia has very strict and well enforced laws to prevent human rights abuses.

    6. Australia has a fairly low level of threats to internal security, but in common with other countries, we have small extremist groups who are closely watched by our security organisations.

    7. Australia has severe water and wind erosion problems in some areas.

    8. A large proportion of Australia's land mass is desert. Just look at a map and it is obvious.

    9. Australia's drinking water is clean and safe to drink.

    10. Our rivers and streams are relatively unpolluted due to stringent anti-pollution laws. Air pollution is low even in our larger cities and virtually non-existent throughout most of the country.

    11. We have 21,318,002 people spread over 7 692 024 square Kilometers of land. Because of the aridity of the interior, most of the population is concentrated in the coastal fringes of the east and south coastal regions.

    12. Australia's crime rate is relatively low when compared to a country like the USA, mainly due to our very strict gun control laws.

  3. 1. Minimum Age to vote is 18.  Everyone of voting age is legally required to vote.   In some states Prisoners may not have the right to vote.

    2. No political prisoners, though some consider Pauline Hanson to have been Australias first Political Prisoner.

    3. Parliamentary Democracy. Current party in power is the Labor Party which is more socialist than capitalist, rougly equivalent to the Democrats of the US only more left wing.

    4. Kevin Rudd is the current Prime Minister of Australia.  He came to power though an open Federal Election.

    5. Used to be negligible.   Several cases have come to the media's attention in previous years through the extremely poor handling of Asylum seekers and Australian citizens mistakenly identified as illegal immigrants and deported.  Since the Sept 11 attacks the human rights of Australians have never been more under attack under law due to the secret service (ASIO) being given police powers, and the lack of accountability that came with that.   Other anti-terrorism laws mirror what the US did with the Patriot act and have eroded citizens human rights in insidious ways.

    6. Internal threats come from potential Al Qaeda sympathisers, criminal groups and out of control teenagers (like Corey Delaney).

    7. Salinating water tables are causing erosion and desertification in Agricultural areas, mostly caused by over clearing and over use of Agricultural land for the last 200 years.

    8.  See Google Maps on any area of rural Australia within 1000kms of a capital city.  The white salt pans are quite clear.

    9. Australia currently does not generate enough clean water naturally to meet its needs.  Most capital cities have invested in Desalinisation plants and taken other measures (water restrictions, recycled water, grey water for gardens etc) to combat the problem.

    10. very little air pollution compared to most other western countries.   The waterways are mostly pristine.  State capitals are the worst offenders and are slowly changing their ways.

    11. less than 1 person per square km

    12.  Very low compared to other western countries.   Very tight gun and knife laws across the nation.  Gun crimes typically make national headlines when they do happen.
