Do they need heaters? I took the heater from my 55GL turtle/fish tank so I was wondering who would benefit most...I can buy more heaters, but I was wondering if the betta/crayfish combos need them?

  1. not sure on the cray but i think they eat fish

the betta needs 2.5 gallons minimum heated

the 4 goldfish need 110 gallons minimum coldwater

betta fish are not from china they are from Thailand and are in a tropical climate

  2. the betta fish is from china so its actually ok for it not to be heated, the crayfish and goldfish will also be fine. a heater might benifit them but it isnt necessary. but the heater in your 55GL might fry your fish in a 5GL. your crayfish may eat the betta and possibly the goldfish, so watch for any aggressive behavior. they would probably be more comfortable in a 10 gallon if you can get one.

  3. I've never kept a crayfish so I don't know about him.

Bettas are tropical fish and need a heater, 2.5 gal would be adequate for him by himself 5 gal would be better.

Goldfish are cold water but they need lots of room as they produce a lot of waste and grow into big active fish.

Ten gallons per fish is usually what is recommended.

  4. Not so sure on crayfish, as I have never owned one, but I will look up some facts about them for you.

Bettas cannot live in cold water! They are tropical fish and MUST be kept at 78-82 degrees, in the 80's when spawning. Heaters are great because not only do they heat the tank, but keep it at a good temperature at all times. You are going to need a 10gal+ tank. Your fish do not have enough room and they will be soo much more comfy in 10gal+.

Good luck! Please feel free to email me if you have more questions.

Here is a great, educated site on crayfish. I highly suggest you take a look at this.

  5. You should have heaters appropriate to the size of your tank. Bettas like to be kept in the upper 70's. You can get a heater for a 5 gallon tank for pretty cheap, but I'd also recommend getting a larger tank. The 5 gallons tend to have chemical imbalances because there's so little water!

  6. u dont have to. i keep bettas in cold water and they live fine but all fish are different so its better safe then sorry,so u should get one
