Definitely.  Knowledge of databases would be a great asset in applied Food Science.  Say you have an organic/ health food store.  People come in and want to know what foods/supplements would be good for psoriasis.  You type 'psoriasis' into your database and it spits out a list of foods and possible supplements.  

    Having a database that you can adjust on your own allows employees access to your expertise and you can also use it for inventory control.

    I would suggest that you take a 1 year IT course at a technical college if all you want is the hands-on knowledge to create your own system.  If you are wanting to add IT to you Food Science degree to get a four year degree equivalent, that would require special permission from both the science dept. and the Commerce Faculty at your university/college.
