Its a newer tv, attached to rabbit ears type antenna. I dont think I need the converter box, but when I check type of signal it is only analog, I know digital is being broadcasted. Is there a switch on the remote or tv I don't know about. Samsung tv.

  1. You probably need a rooftop antenna. Digital signals aren't being broadcast as strong as the old analog signals. I am assuming that you set the tv for digital and antenna when you did a scan for channels. If not, start there.

Just to clarify a couple of answers from your last question. As long as the tv has a digital (atsc) tuner, you do not need a converter box. Your old rooftop antenna should work fine. The new "digital" antennas are picking up the same frequency as the older antennas. Granted, new antenna design may be better but if you already have a rooftop one, use it instead of running out to buy a new one. Some people will also need an antenna booster but try the rooftop first without one.

  2. you don't need a converterbox as i'm sure your TV comes with an ATSC converter built in.  what you DO need if you want OTA (over the air) HD broadcast is an HD antenna.

  3. Don't let anyone tell you you need a "special HDTV antenna".  ANY UHF or VHF/UHF TV antenna will work, you just need to know whether the digital channels you are receiving are on stations 2-13 (VHF) or 14-69 (UHF).  I suspect your analog issues stem from either the stations you are receiving or those low-strength rabbit ears.  I would invest in a higher-strength exterior antenna if possible.

For the next few years, until the broadcasters are forced to change to digital in February 2009, most are not using high power for their digital broadcasts and still putting most of their power into standard definition analog TV. That is why an external TV antenna may be required in your area.

    Good luck.

  4. Answers assumes you are in the U.S.

All 13" or larger TVs made in the last year have digital tuners built into them.(by Law) So unless you were told when you bought it (again there is a law that this must be told to the buyer) that is was an old analog only TV you should get digital broadcasts (if they are available) in your area. Which they should be.

There is NO such thing as a digital or HD antenna it is marketing hype. A TV antenna is a dumb piece of metal that picks up certain range of frequencies. If the signal is in the frequency range of the antenna it will receive it. Digital TV uses the same frequency range as analog TV so that should not be a problem. You will NOT need a different antenna.

What you MUST do is setup your TV to receive the digital channels. This is done electronically. Go into the setup menu and do an auto channel search for all channels digital and analog. That will read them into memory. This is a one time only setup, then your TV can display all the channels it found. It should tell you how many it found.

A broadcast station can put up to 5 digital channels is the space of one analog channel so on your TV the digital channels will probably be the main analog channel + a decimal channel. example main channel is 49 digital probably will be 49.1, 49.2, 49.3 etc.
