  1. What kind of "digital camcorder"?

MiniDV and Digital 8 tape based camcorders use firewire for video transfer - not USB - your computer needs a firewire por and you connect a firewire cable to the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on your computer.

Flash memory and hard drive based camcorders use USB and are treated like any other USB mass storage device - which needs device-specific drivers for Windows - sometimes they are already in the OS, sometimes they need to be installed. Generally, with Macs, they just mount to the desktop and no additional drivers are needed.

DVD based camcorders have a couple of ways - but the end result is poor video quality: If your computer has a drawer loading DVD drive, rip the video with HandBrake: http://handbrake.fr/

If your computer's optical drive does only CDs or is a slot loader, then you need to get an "analog/digital bridge" like

    or

and connect the camcorder to the A/D bridge with the AV cable that you would normally use to connect the camcorder to a TV...
