I had the next 10 years of my life planned out. I was almost done with high school then after Spring Break I never went back to school because I became very sick and no one knew what was wrong with me. Mean while I still planned on going to college in the fall on a rotc scholarship. Well I lost it because I was diagnosed with an autoimmune system disease. Now I have no way to pay for college. Does anyone know where I can find a scholarship that will help cover my expenses through college? Are there scholarships for people with disease? And if so where can I find them?

  1. I would either call the college you are interested in going to or try www.scholarships.com they have a huge list of available scholarships. Good Luck!

  2. scholarships.com you answer a bunch of questions, im deaf in one ear and adopted so i was able to fill out a few.

  3. I could tell you if you gave a name of the disease.  Auto-immune is way to broad to give you a definite source for funds.

  4. EXCELLENT question!! (starred!!).

Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you because I am in a similar situation. I went to college for 2 years before becoming VERY ill with an autoimmune condition as well. I had to quit school and move home to get better. Well that was 5 years ago. I am now working full time (I need medical insurance!) but I would like to go back and finish my degree.

Anyhoo, I'll be watching your answers!! I hope someone sheds some light on this for both of us!!

(P.S. I hope you are feeling better!!)

...Personally I hate the word "disease"!! Makes me think of contagious nasty rashes, weeping sores, etc... I prefer the word "condition". I hear the word "disease" and i want to whip out the anti-bacterial soap/wipes. Eww!!!

  5. maybe...look on google.

if not, contact your college advisor....

    maybe even fastweb.com

There are a lot of auto-immune diseases; some are debilitating and progressive while others just present as a pain in the butt. In no one should your illness impede your future. If you have finished high school, or have your GED, fill out the FAFSA and see where you stand with regard to financial aid. While there are no programs specifically for people with auto-immune problems (diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and a host of others), you can still get financial aid and take student loans to pursue your education.

In the meantime, check with your state's disability board. Depending on your illness and the scope and nature of it, you may be able to get classified as disabled and be eligible for other benefits regarding education. It varies from state to state.

Use this link to fill out the free FAFSA. Do not pay anyone to complete this form for you; that's just a waste of money.

You can make this work. Absolutely. Good luck to you!

  7. 1.  Go to the Financial Aid office of the university you wish to attend immediately.  One of my cadets didn't think he qualified for anything and got a $1200 grant. You don't know what you might get if you don't ask.

    2.  Check out FastWeb.com.  Tons of scholarships.

Sorry to hear about your illness.  I hope that its under control now.
