They will be sharing & spliting my internet bill with me. They would be putting a wireless router on my computer. My question is, will they be able to use their internet when my computer is shut down? And will they have access to any of my files? Anything else I should know about?

Thanks everyone!

  1. when u shut down ur pc,still they will be able to have access, but file sharing impossible, don't worry even if file sharing is there, they can't steal ur files unless u share it!!!!

but they won't be able to have internet if u switch off ur wireless modem...

  2. If your neighbor attaches a wireless router to your Internet connection, then you will each share the same connection. Your computer does not need to be on for your neighbor to use your connection. Just your modem (DSL or cable) needs to be on.

Given that, however I would only do this with a completely trusted person as you are exposing your computer to their computer, and any vulnerabilities inside.  i.e. if either one has a trojan, the other could become infected. If you have open file shares, your neighbor could see them.

  3. The two computers wouldn't be connected so they would not have access to  your files.  You will only be sharing an internet connection.  As long as you don't shut off the router they will still be able to access the internet

  4. 1.  They will be able to use the connection when your PC is off, because they are really using the router, not your PC.

    2.  No they will not be able to see any of your files, or what you are doing.

    3.  They will be able to tell, via router settings, that you are on or off line, but not what you are doing.

The router is not put on your PC, but rather the modem that you have for your high speed connection.

The router just plugs into your modem.
