Ok. The person who told me this was a pet store owner. I bought a cage, which was wire because I wasnt sure which one to get. Anyways, the cage had a tray under it instead of the hamster sleeping on the bedding you put the bedding in the tray. Well the store keeper told me that instead of putting bedding in the tray, put kitty litter. He said that bedding absorbs the smell and will stick in it and sooner or later your house or room will start smelling like urine, and kitty litter somehow keeps the odor down. So my grandma went out and bought me some, but i haven't put it in yet because I wanted to get your opinion first and maybe see if you ever tried it or know anybody who uses or even used it and if it really worked. So if you can please help so I will know to use bedding or kitty litter. Thank you!!!

  1. No-  if they ingest it they'll die.Use plain newspaper if you want to be economical. If you want to splurge a bit buy Aspen shavings.Wire bottoms are cruel-line it with newspaper.

It always bothers me how some looser who can't hold a job anywhere suddenly becomes an expert because a pet store hired him.

  2. No because they can ingest it and die. And it is hard on their feet. Here is a list of beddings you can use(odered from most preferred to least preffered).

    •Aspen

    •Carefresh

    •Corncob

•Pine(if aired out for a day or two)

DO NOT USE CEDAR OR CAT LITTER!!!!!

  3. Don't do it! If you want to help keep the smell down, maybe you could use some of the litter under the cage, but I wouldn't put it in with the hamster. They need regular bedding materials...not litter, to sleep on.  I think you already figured this out, but, I'm glad you asked!  Your hamster will thank you!

  4. DONt use cant litter for a hamster!!!! they could digest it and then die, and itd get stuck to their... you know.

even if you have it under soemthing;  the smell is prolly too strong.

    DO NOTR USE IT!!!

(not to be mean; just making that clear :))

  5. No, don't use cat litter.  It has way too much dust in it which is really bad for hamsters.  Buy some normal bedding and change it ever week because it will start to smell like urine.  Please return that cat litter back to the store because it's not good for your hamster.  I'm glad you asked here if you could use it, because now you know that it's not good lol.

  6. I've never tried kitty litter for my hamsters, and it might keep the smell down,  but regular bedding won't smell as long as you change it often enough.  A down side to using kitty litter is that hamsters love to burrow in their cages and dig tunnels everywhere in the bedding, but they won't be able to do that in kitty litter.  Therefore, your hamster might get too cold and not be as comfortable in the cat litter.
