Question:

I have a driver's license, but I don't own a car. When I rent a car, how do I get liability insurance?

I think liability insurance is mandatory in all states, and I am aware that I can purchase loss damage waiver from the rental company. What about liability insurance? Is it absolutely necessary to buy the liability insurance provided by the rental company, or is it included in the rental rates?

  1. Try this one - http://autoinsurance.bebto.com - I personally have their car insurance, cause it is the cheapest for my family in our area.

As I know it provides such a service for rental cars.

  2. You can get 1st party coverage and liability coverage from the rental company... if money is no object. Otherwise you can purchase a non-owners policy from an insurance company. Keep in mind that this is not a day or week policy, it's probably going to be a 6 month policy but it's very inexpensive.

  3. Every rental company I've used has offered liability insurance as an add on to the base rental price. My best friend works for Hertz and in fact tells me that's one of their big profit centers (selling insurance).  So unless you go with a small noname rental company, you'll likely be able to buy as much insurance as you want....and even probably more than you need!

I've NEVER seen liability insurance included in the base rental rates.

  4. Rental car companies are required by law to provide state minimum liability on all of their vehicles.  You'll usually see a half sheet of paper in the glove box that is the proof of insurance.

You can also purchase a regular insurance policy without a vehicle.  As far as I know, most of the bigger name insurance companies carry it.

  5. You can purchase liability insurance from the rental company as well.  It's not included, you pay extra for it.

Or, you can buy a "named nonowner" policy, to cover you when you drive a vehicle not in your household, and not furnished for your regular use.

But it's hard to find an agent willing to sell you one, as it's cheap (read, they don't make much commission), and  a PITB to write.
