The computer is old I know. But it was working fine. But now when I do maintenance on it it only defrags up to 2% then starts over. I tried leaving it on all night . But it still won't go past 2 %.

I can't afford a new computer or to have it repaired. Can someone maybe tell me a back door way of doing this.

Other then being slower it works fine.

  1. Try to clean up your hard drive first by deleting some stuff that you dont need.  What's happening is, the defrag program takes pieces of files and temporarily stores them in a holding area on the hard disk before bringing them back together... if there is not enough room on the drive to hold those temporary files then the defrag cant work properly.

Delete stuff you dont need first, and be sure to flush out the recycle bin also.

  2. I would suggest going in and cleaning all of the disk files first (its in the same systems tool area as the defrag) get rid of all temp. internet files, cookies, cache etc then after you get all that done try to run the defrag again.  That should help you out tremendously.

  3. The reason defrag won't finish is because you have programs idling in the background.

Go to "Start" -> "Run" -> Type "msconfig" and go to "Startup" tab.

Then deselect any third party programs besides "explorer.exe" "taskman.exe."

Hi ok, restart, see if any programs load up besides windows on the bottom right hand side of your screen. Run defrag it should finish after hour or two depending how fragmented drive is.

Then go back to msconfig and re-load your programs and restart again.

  4. Go to www.download.com and get the new Auslogic Disk Defragger. Everyone's all ga-ga over it. It's free. If that locks up, you have a different problem with your machine which you have to troubleshoot. Virus maybe or some problem in the registry.
