I have a family crest that I found and was wondering how would I find the family to return it?

A friend of the family presented me with a pin today, that he believes belonged to a family from the early 1800s. How would I find out what family it was from?

if it was a famous family than in books or you can look online around google and places

If you know the name, you could go to a genealogy department and ask them for assistance.  I want to say Oxford University has one.  I am sure the family would be pleased to get it back.  Good on you for attempting to do the right thing :-)
