Question:

I have a family member with OCD. Please give tips for how I should respond when he is upset and obsessing.

He becomes fixed on a problem and will not stop hounding me to fix it in the way he thinks the problem should be fixed. Nothing I say makes him confident that I am doing my best to take care of the problem.

  1. It might be helpful for you to go with him to his next doctors appointment.  Maybe he needs his medication adjusted.

    In the mean time, maybe you can help him quiet his thinking.

    Ask him to sit down with you and try to do some relaxation techniques.

    Maybe trying to distract him from what he is obsessing about might get him focused on something else.   It must be such a strain on you.
