what does 10.0 MP mean?

I think it means higher pixel quality (or something like that?) but I was wondering exactly how that affects my pictures?

any other information would be really helpful, I've never taken photogrpahy classes or anything like that and I'm lost when it comes to these things!

That's the max resolution your camera shoots at. It doesn't mean any higher quality (sometimes, higher mp can degrade the image, depending on the sensor). It means you got sucked into the "more is better" trap.
