Question:

I have a few questions regarding the electrical wiring for a hot tub?

The tub has a 5HP motor and the outdoor disconnect including a dual pole 50A GFCI breaker.

It isn't feasible to run new cable from the main panel as it would require ripping out the ceiling of a finished basement. However, before finishing the ceilings he ran a 6/3 + ground cable to an unfinished room. Is it normal to use 6/3 + ground (as seen in this picture I found online): http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/elect/panel/sub_panel/01/elspra45ax.jpg I've wired subpanels before, but I've always used a minimum of 6/4.

Here's my plan, assuming 6/3 + ground is adequate:

Attach the 6/3 + ground to a dual pole 50A in the main service panel.

Attach the other end to a new sub panel in the unfinished room, keeping neutral & ground isolated.

Install a 50A dual pole 50A in the sub panel.

Run 6/4 from that sub panel to the disconnect near the tub (trenching & using sch 40 PVC).

Please let me know if you see any problems with this. I will of course verify with an inspector.

  1. Looks great.  Except you need a quick disconnect at a min. distance of 5 feet from the tub in sight of the tub.

  2. if it has a brown wire, a yellow + green wire and a blue wire

put the blue wire to the little blue ring underneath and do the same for the rest
