I have a firewall. it's about to expire soon. when buying another one, do I need to remove the current one...?

You will ahve to remove the your current firewall. Don't bother paying for another. Go to the link below and download and install the one you want. If you are using XP I prefer ZoneAlarm. Comodo is the best but it will drive you crazy while it learns your system. Read the editors reviews.
