  1. No,all the salamanders I know of need a land area and besides your cichlids(if that is what you have) would likely end up beating up or even killing the salamander.

  2. yes go a head that would be very fine. salamander's don't hurt fish.

  3. The Malawi, might do like what Jack says, but then again they might not.  I know I've seen Tangs in the lake go after a 15 lb turtle that was invading it's brood, but outside of that, I'm not so sure they would try to mess around with something like that.  I think what would be a bigger challenge is going to be, how do you set up a dry walking area in a tank like that, and not interfere with your set up for the fish.

Really, unless the salamander happend to try to wander into a cave or rocky area which a bigger Mbuna felt was his brooding area, I don't see them just going after it on site.  Even the more aggressive types, like say a Red Zebra probably wouldn't just go after it to go after it.  When breeding times come around, then yeah, that's very likely, but again, it's all about the space.  Males will chase anyone and everyone out of their space in attempts to lure the female to spawn with him.  In theory then, with a large enough tank that is more high, then long you should be able to establish a walking dry area for a salamander and keep it away from the lower levels of where Mbuna would be aggressive at.  Would be very challenging though.

  4. er, no.

firstly - most salamanders are not fully aquatic. You're thinking of the larval form (axolotls).

Secondly, they prefer the water cooler, and of lower pH.
