  1. If you can spare the money to invest in an Aerogarden, you won't be disappointed.  I have two and grow tomatoes in one and herbs in the other.  I also intend to grow other veges and strawberries as well as salad greens.

It's like hydroponics, no soil, bugs or pesticides.  You don't need a window as they come with special lighting that emulates sunshine.

I planted my herbs 3 weeks ago and they are already quite well established.  I also planted one with my own tomato seeds and within 1.5 weeks they are all up and about 2 inches high (they are cherry tomato bushes.

Can't recommend it highly enough for gardening indoors!

  2. Look in to Hydroponics, or soil-less gardens.

Hydroponics grows plants under lights in water solutions. The hydroponics store can sell you very nice starter kits that includes the root media (for holding the roots), the water pumps and tubes for water, the filtration system, and the nutrients and fertilizers needed for your plants to absorb. Yes, they are expensive, but the initial cost is worth the harvest. Your Hydroponics store can also help you with learning how to control insect infestations and light needs.

  3. You can grow tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupes, snap peas, beans. But you  would  have to open the windows to let in the bees to pollinate the flowers  or you have to do it by hand with a cotton swap.  For quick harvest, plant some leafy vegetables : lettuce, spinach, and herds.

  4. Herbs that you can grow for use in cooking would be a good choice. A pot of basil, oregano, or chives would flourish there and would add a great flavoring to your meals. Dried stuff is no match for actual fresh-grown herbs.

Herbs are also easier to grow than vegetables like tomatoes and will thrive on less attention and less daylight.

  5. You can grow some varieties of tomatoes in a container.  Leaf lettuce would also probably do fine in a container.  Or you could opt for an herb garden.
