  1. Its been a few years since was in boise so I might be off on the road names but if you want to stay close to town: for camping I'd head up to lucky peak (theres only one road up to the lake I accessed it by going up warmsprings ave, main st turns into warmsprings) and go past the lake and into boise county (the city of boise is in ada county hence all the 1a license plates).  if you just want some good hiking then 4th street recreation area is nice, just head to the north end go through hyde park (while your in hyde park parrila grill is the best burritos in town, luck 13 is awsome pizza and harry's makes good burgers and its just a good place to spend an evening)  go out 4th st and up into the hills theres lots of hiking and mountion bike trails, you can also head up to bogus basin ski area its only about a 20 min drive and its nice up there, I think you take harrison st (also north end old towne boise) to get up there, anything north end you should be able to acces either off state st. or take the connector (184) down town and head up 8th st till you get to the historic district (you'll know when you start seeing old houses) then cut across to what st you need on state st or hill rd, I think harrison is where 18th st should be.

if you want to go out of town, anderson resivour is about 30 min out of mountion home(hour out of boise on the way to sunvalley (2 hours out of boise)  which is also a good place for enjoying the outdoors and spending way to much money to rub elbows with the rich and famous, they should still be running the lifts on bald mountion for hiking and bikeing, if you go past sunvalley/ketchum toward salmon thats a really great area too.

mccall is about 2 hours from boise (go north on 95) theres good camping, a nice lake and 2 ski hills with lots of camping, about 45 min past mccall is the little town of riggins and the salmon and snake rivers, riggins is pretty much a post office and about 20 white water outfitters if you want to do some rafting and/or a boat tour of h***s canyon. h***s canyon is awesome, only way in or out is boat or plane, very remote, lots of wildlife and great fishing.

  2. there are numerous National Forests in that area any one of them would be great.......find them here
