He wants to know how to buff up his application with other extracurriculars and programs and stuff. Something that would look impressive. He already has a 4.0 GPA., but he needs more.

  1. It is in the volunteering part.  He needs to be very creative.  It can not just be volunteering in a shelter 20 hours a year kind of thing.  Think bigger.  He should create his own volunteering experience that helps solves a problem in his own community.  I worked with a student who received donated (outdated) computers.  He and a friend refurbished them, installed internet software and donated to needy families in the community.  They went to the homes and set up the computers and trained the families on how to use the internet.  They wanted low income students to have internet access and word processing for school purposes.  Another example is a student who spent a large amount of time in the hospital as a patient.  He was extremely bored in the hospital and vowed to help other patients when he got better.  The student and his father started a golf tournament.  All the money raised went to buy Xboxes, playstations, gameboys, games, etc. for the children's hospital.  Solve a real life problem and be ready to explain what you learned from the experience.

  2. They will probably go with grades/extracurrics to be honest. If he is a freshman they will go with his highschool grades as well. If he could do something afterschool or on his own before his app that would help to show that he is doing his best in the environment he is in. (that is what colleges care most about)
