I have a gas question?

I have an '09 Dodge Journey. I get about 20 mpg on the backroads here in Northern Michigan. I have a little under quarter of a tank left with a 60 mile round trip I have to complete. Do you think I can do it without running out of gas?

*I suck at basic math, I know so please don't be mean. I also don't get paid until Wednesday, and thats my normal commute *

  1. im sure ya will make it .

some cars can keep goin after the red line empty

  2. if its like most cars the last quarter of a tank goes faster than the first 3. The best bet to say is no get some gas. You should have 2 maybe 3 gallons left but it is a risk also running a car down can cause problems to the fuel pump keep it above a 1/4 tank if you can.

  3. You can make it if you try not to put too much pressure on the gas, meaning you dont go speeding and your engine is at its highest speed. Drive at a minimum speed.

If your in the need for speed, i might suggest you get to gas station just to be sure.

  4. Take it easy on the gas peddle and you'll be fine. Even after you hit the E mark you'll still have a little gas in the tank. Take off slow, that's where you'll use alot of gas.

  5. I can go 60 miles round trip on less than a 1/4 tank (13 gallon tank). ...but I'm driving a Corolla that gets 35mpg. Your tank is 20.5 gallons. You have a little less than a 1/4 tank so you probably have roughly 4 gallons left. At 20mpg you can theoretically get 80 miles before the tank is bone dry. Letting it go that far is very bad idea. In all modern vehicles there is a fuel pump in the gas tank. This pump is lubricated by the gasoline as it pumps fuel. If the fuel gets too low the pump can freeze up from lack of lubrication. It can also suck up trash from the bottom of the tank causing damage to fuel injection system. Bottom line: Lots of expensive repairs and I doubt your vehicle warranty covers vehicle abuse (letting fuel level get too low is considered abuse). Do the smart thing and get at least 5 gallons of gas. Even in my little fuel sipper car I wouldn't chance traveling 60 miles on less than 1/4 tank.
