  1. I would say that it depends on the dog. I have six cats and two dogs. I have a male beagle/jack russell mix and he DOES NOT like the cats. He will tolerate them but that is about as far as he goes. My other dog is a femal boxer/bulldog (she weighs about 90lbs) mix and she actually snuggles with my cats. I think it just really depends on the dog's temperment. Of course female's will have the maternal instict and probably would handle cats a bit better.

  2. It sometimes does, depending on how the dog behaves with cats. My female cats hated my female dog.

  3. First of all, make sure you adopt a dog that you have verified isn't aggressive to cats.  If you adopt from a shelter that fosters their animals, they probably have both cats and dogs, so the animals will have been exposed to one another.  Female dogs are much more likely to be more tolerant.  I have 3 cats who don't like our dogs, but the dogs just don't bother them.  They take the hint that they should keep their distance.  Both dogs are female.

  4. Cats and dogs usually do not get along well by nature and if u do decide to get a dog in the end a female will be more gentle with the cat than a male.
