  1. No, you can't catch a disease from her, unless you caught her wild, which is highly unlikely!

  2. No, you are extremely unlikely to catch any disease at all from a domesticated rodent that is cleaned and washed regularly.

hope i eased your mind :)

  3. There's no such thing as a golden rat but I assume you are just referencing her general color. No, you cannot get a disease from her if she is a domestic pet rat. She does, however, need a same s*x friend. Rats are too social to be kept alone.

I'd recommend getting another rat from a reputable breeder or rescue as pet store rats are often ill or, in the case of females, pregnant. Plus, you don't want to support pet stores and their mills or backyard breeders:

Always make sure to quarantine a new rat:

  4. Always wear a condom!

  5. Since your rat was bred in captivity, and since she lives in a controlled environment with you, the chance that you could get any zoonotic illness from her is extremely unlikely. In 20 years, I have never caught anything from any of the many rats I have had. If there were anything you could catch, you would have caught it by now. In fact, since you are the one leaving the home, you are more likely to bring her an illness so be sure to wash your hands before handling her, especially if you have been handling other animals. You do not need to wash your rat - your rat will bath herself, but do keep the cage clean, more to protect her health than anything.

  6. Ive never heard of a golden rat but if you got the rat in the pet store, and do all those things that you mentioned esp. washing your hands after handling your rat, then you should be alright!

  7. If its golden im guessing you have a topaz or argente- if you brush her coat back do you see grey or white hairs underneath? If its grey she is topaz and if she is white she is argente. Well... thats IF her eyes are ruby coloured (like a mix or red and black)

I know there is a zoonotic disease that can spread from rat to human, though the chances of you getting it are pretty slim. It is spread via urine but it would be unusual for her to be infected in the first place

heres some info I found on what rats can carry- but if your rat is happy and healthy I wuoldnt be worried- I have kept dozens of rats and never caught anything from them. They are also very clean little animals
