ive been playing golf for ages and im not very good at it, im at a handicap of 40 and i kept hitting my ball into the rough, the balls i hit were always expensive ones like callaways or nike's, and lately i bought cheap pick up balls from my local sports shop just to get more balls for a better price, but should i stick with better performance balls like nike ones or top flights, can they affect performance?

  1. Find the "Ball Hawk " in your area who scours the courses for balls from the woods or water holes. He will have hundreds which you can buy relatively cheap of all makes and models. Better yet, learn to spot golf balls and buy a retriever to fish them out of the water yourself. The best time is after a charity tournament.

  2. instead of going on courses get better by going on a golf range and get a teacher as your obviously not using a good technique it may cost money to do but is cheaper than loosing all those balls in the long run.

  3. If you are hitting into the rough - the ball is not the issue.

    Address your game!

There is a problem with the way you are hitting the ball which means you are always getting into difficulty.

If you have a tendency to slice your balls from left to right, then aim further left when hitting the ball and vice versa.  Make the fairway as big as possible for yourself by compensating for known problems in your game.

Certainly get someone to analyse your game, your local Pro Golfer will do this for you - a few hours with an instructor could fix this problem.

  4. Premium balls like Nike One Platinums, Callaway Tour ix's, and Titleist Pro V1's definitely affect performance. Unfortunately, the improvement is perceptible only with those who, more or less, have a decent swing. However, I don't think you will see a marked improvement on your game just by using premium balls.

By the way you describe your game, it is apparent that you lose a lot of balls. I suggest that you stick to less expensive balls until you reduce your handicap to around 15. When you get better, you will be able to determine which type of golf ball is best suited to your game and you can improve your handicap further.
