Not even the deadly rattlesnake--nor ANY of the other prairie creatures-was dreaded as much as the skunk,

is any a pronoun or an adjective?

    It is not an adjective because it is not modifying a noun.

    It is not a pronoun because pronouns are a defined set: I, You, He/She, etc.
