I have a gravely with a 25 hp Kawasaki, it backfires, what would cause this?

  1. How are the spark plugs? That would be the first thing I would check. I would clean/replace them. It could be the carburetor. Make sure it's not running too rich/too lean.

    "Common causes of backfires are:

        * Timing – If it is distributor-less

        * Timing – If a two stroke engine is backfiring every other stroke.

        * Fuel pressure, fuel filter and pump – leaks and corrosion could cause lack of fuel during the fuel injection event.

        * Bad wiring in ignition – ..if car won't run for more than a few moments."


  2. You should start by checking your muffler. Make sure that it has no holes in it and that it is good condition.

    If that's good, check your muffler gaskets and make sure that they are in good shape and have good seals.

    If that doesn't solve your problem, then it's a problem with your fuel not being burned properly and coming out too rich at the muffler. If this is the case, test your coil and make sure it's not faulty. If that's fine, you may need to do some carb work, or take it to your local repair shop.
