I have an acoustic guitar that my oldest cousin gave me because he realised he could never be bothered with it. After about a year of letting the dust fall on it, I have decided to take it out and try. What are some good ways to learn at home? I dont want to get guitar lessons, we dont have that much money and Im in my senior years now so I want to earn all the money I can from my job, balance that with school with a bit of guitar on the side. How do I do this?

  1. I don't know why you people are so adverse to TAKING LESSONS so you can learn how to play the guitar correctly.  You don't self teach how to drive a car or how to operate an intricate piece of machinery, so why do you insist on self teaching the guitar?  I can always spot people who thought THEY didn't need to take lessons.. when the come to me and pay twice as much to have me try to take away all the bad habits they picked up thinking they could learn to play a guitar on their own.

GET A TEACHER... it's PAY FOR IT NOW or it's going to be PAY FOR IT LATER.. but you WILL eventually pay it... if you play that long... because many self taught guitar players give up because they don't know the basics they could learn from a teacher.

  2. Don't even try.

  3. Download guitar tabs which are short cuts to songs that show you string by string where the notes are. You don't have to read music to play tabs. OR you could go to youtube and watch other people play songs that you like and check out their finger positioning OR you could go to itunes podcasts and download guitar lessons or guitar theory. Above all- PRACTICE.

Get a guitar tuner- nothing sucks worse than trying to learn to play on an out of tune guitar.

  4. http://www.jamorama.com/jamarama.php

im not sure if this will help but i tried

  5. go to http://www.justinguitar.com he's like a free online teacher. if you want you could also buy the book "The Complete Billboard Illustrated Guitar Handbook" which is also really helpful if you wanna learn alone, and lastly practice it's the only way to improve.

  6. Check the phone book most of your local Guitar shops will have lessons starting around $50 a month.

Look for one that is acredited by the National Guitar Workshop they are really good.

  7. don't need expensive guitar lessons, just look at some videos on youtube, learn how to strum, and other simple stuff, and whenever u wanna play a song that u like, just get the tab and play! aaaaaany tab u want, well almost, right here www.ultimate-guitar.com thats where i get all my tabs and i've learned to play a few stuff, mostly AC/DC.

  8. If the guitar has been sitting around for over a year, its gonna need tuned. You really should take it to a local music store and ask them to change the strings and tune it up for you and show you how to do the same. Then ask them to sell you their best beginners guitar book (preferably one that comes with a cd) and a chord chart. Go home and get to work!

  9. if you want to improve your technic playing acoustic guitar, look at this site

  10. Theres a lot of online sites that could help you.  I just learned tab and from there you can learn any song basically.

Hope that helps!  Have fun with your guitar! =)
