Question:

I have a hard time breathing in a pool?

When I was swimming today, I noticed after a while that I felt pressure on my chest and had a hard time breathing. I had to force the air in rather than just breathing naturally. But when I raised my chest above the water, I had no trouble. The water wasn't cold and when I took a few minutes to rest (in the water) it didn't help any. I've noticed this before, but it was never as bad. Is this normal?

  1. One usually feels a slight pressure about a metre or more below the surface. Yours could more be due too much intake of air, not breathing out air underwater, extended swimming,  a phobia of water or asthma.

Do your strokes and kicks slowly and accurately, and avoid holding your breath for long--breathe out small bubbles as you stroke along. You should not experience breathing difficulties when your strokes and breathing are relaxed. Get a good coach to guide you should  such problems persist.

  2. chlorine alergy maybe?  Could be irritating the lining of your lungs

  3. my only guess would be the changing pressure due to the water on you lungs, greater pressure (although the surface of a swimming pool doesnt really seem like a lot to me) means you have to work harder to expand your lungs

  4. uhhmmm this happens to me too...i think its natural...but tell someone just inncase, maybe your just claustrophobic?? could be, just make sure tho

    good luck

    hugs
