I found out I have a heart murmur, I am going to a specialist to get an "Echo" done. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to better myself and help this go away/heal or whatever happends with these things.

  1. A murmur is just a sound caused by another problem in the heart. Find out what that problem is first and treat it. Most heart conditions will be there for life and can only be treated through surgery and maintained by medication.

Second anything that will relieve the pressure on your heart will help whatever heart problem that you may have. The murmur may never go away, but you can lessen the impact of whatever is causing it.

Get rid of unwanted body fat.

Reduce your blood pressure, without medication if possible.

Become fit and active. Your muscles will requiring a lower volume of blood to get the same amount of oxygen.

But remember to do this in a healthy fashion. Going on a fasting diet will cause some heart conditions to worsen quickly.

  2. I have had a heart murmur since I was a child. I'm in my forties now. Diet will help your heart if you are overweight by putting less stress on the heart. An echo is a test where they use gel and a doppler to look inside all the chambers of the heart and see what it looks like on the inside. It doesn't hurt but it can be uncomfortable at times when they press the doppler in certain areas to get a good look. A murmur is the noise the heart makes when blood back flows through one of valves into the other chamber. If the valve is damaged to the point that too much blood back flows they will have to do something but that will be found out by the echo. The murmur will have to be monitored on a regular basis but if mild it shouldn't cause you any real problems. Mine doesn't.

  3. Just the detection of a murmur need not make you worried. Many murmurs are innocent. Just wait till the echo report comes.

  4. The only thing you can do at this point is follow your doctors advise about medication and how much you can exercise. If she or he gives you the go-ahead to exercise then work on cardio to build a stronger heart. Just remember, a heart murmer in itself is harmless. Sometimes it's caused by an underlying condition (which will be the problem that when fixed, your murmur will most likely go away with it) or your heart may just like being noisy. If your heart murmur turns out to be not related to any other condition then every couple years get your heart checked out again to make sure nothing else has shown up and make sure you're fit and eating a healthy diet full of protein, fibre, water and vitamins (from their natural sources).
