Question:

I have a heat pump and it keeps icing up!?

I have had two repairmen come out in the last 15 months. Both times, they've added coolant. The last week has been rainy, so there's been a lot of moisture in the air. Last night, the unit froze up (again). I turned it off all night, and it got pretty warm inside the house. Out of curiosity, I turned the heater on, and it came on. However, when I turn the system on cool, the outside unit comes on, but doesn't blow any air inside the house. HELP!

  1. The intake is dirty it needs to be cleaned. The air is having a hard time going in to the A/C and it is freezing up. Call someone else and tell them you want the intake cleaned. It is different than the filter. They usually have to weld the parts apart, then take them out and clean them, then weld them back in.

  2. try this, turn the thermostat to the on position, and cool, see if the fan inside comes on then.when you turned the thermostat from heat to cool did you hear a swoosh sound coming from the ouside unit?check the breakers to be sure you haven't tripped a breaker on the airhandler, their on 2 different breakers,if it comes on in on position, you probably need a new thremostat ,if not it could be a number of things.do you hear the fan on in the airhandler, just no air,or nothing ?

be sure you gave it enough time for the delay to kick out.alot of units have built in delays on the fans so when it is turned from one setting to another and the fan changes speeds it wont hurt the motor.hope this helps you atleast alittle bit.

  3. When and if it ever freezes up again, instead of shutting it off for several hours, just turn your "cool"off and turn your "fan"on for an hour and it will defrost the coil for you.

It will keep freezing until the leak is repaired. They are just loading it up with gas and rolling to the next call and never locating and repairing your refrigerant leak. They give repairmen and companies a bad name and a black eye.It is easy to just add refrigerant and immediate results are felt if that is what the problem is.Tell them you need this leak located and repaired.Good luck.

  4. If they have had to add refrigerant twice, you most likely have a leak. But then again you could have other problems and the service people aren't diagnosing this properly. Try another company and have them check it out. If it is truly low on refrigerant, it's time to start thinking. If the system is over 12 years old, it's replacement time if it is leaking. It's not worth the cost of repairs after this age.
