  1. when you've been riding a while, you'll have a feel for your cadence. shift up or down to maintain your cadence.

I ride 85-88rpm and can feel the need to change gears. but every rider is different

  2. The nice thing about bike gears is that there are no rules- put it in whichever gear that makes it comfortable for you to ride.

Usually, going up hills you will want to use lower gears- maybe 1 or 2- but sometimes especially if you are just coming off a downhill you may want higher gears.

Remember that you must be pedalling forward as you shift, and that it will probably not be successful if you try and shift with a lot of pressure on the pedals- like pedalling uphill.

  3. I don't know that bike specifically, but in general there is no "correct" gear. You should use the gear that allows you to maintain as easy a pedal rotation as possible while still pushing reasonably hard. Aim for 70-90 rpm ... less puts excess strain on knees, and more makes you breath hard without getting far/fast.

If you can see the gears use the smallest cog on the rear wheel for the flats or downhills, and the largest cog for the steepest hills.
