I think the problem is the shade or the peppers? I need grass there. I have a few children and one dog. HELP PLEASE! And no artificial turf. I have been quoted about $14k for the backyard!

  1. I guess that would have to depend on if you really like your pepper tree that much. I would have to get rid of it.Call one of local tree removal services ,don't just take your 1st offer.Keep calling different services. Or I would suggust trimming it down to let more of the sun through .You can also add grass seeds to get it started just make sure you add water everyday.good-luck

  2. have you tried looking at lowes or home depot? they sell grass seeds for all types of sun exposure.

take a look at these products, maybe they could work for you:

you might also consider dichondra http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&rl...

    or clover.

If its the little peppers from the tree that make the soil unfriendly to grass, consider amending the soil and then devoting alot of time to keeping your new grass clear of them (constant raking).

    hope this helps, good luck!

edit: trimming the tree back a little is also a great idea to let in more light to make growing a lawn easier, but the idea about hostas is not so good (as you have kids and a dog) I've heard hostas are toxic!

  3. Have you tried hostas with mulch and decorative stones and benches? Once started hosta multiplies and spreads, needs no care, and hard to kill.
