my female Boston Terrier refuses to go to the bathroom in the rain. I normally know what to do but i am finally stumped about something. It has been raining all day and she WILL NOT go to the bathroom. She hasnt peed or pooped and her stomach is huge swollen from holding it. Here is the problem. I know that if she doesn't go and i go to bed then she will do it in the floor. It happens EVERY time and i just don't know how to get her to go?

  1. Walk her - the exercise will almost certainly make her need to relieve herself!

  2. dogs normally don't like to go on an area where it feels wet so if you can find a porch for cars or some type of canopy that may be your only bet.otherwise you may have to seclude her in the garage or a room without carpet and set some newspaper down 3-4 layers thick.

  3.   I have an Australian Terrier with a rain aversion issue.  I have a plastic kiddie pool in the yard, just outside the back door, upside down next to a two foot pole in the ground.  When it is raining & it's time to go out I put the end of the pool on the pole, instant dry spot with an awning.

This is a perfect example of why pups should be crate trained from the start.  When she really has to go, rain or not, she will wake you up.

  4. My lab shepard mix is the same way she hate the rain.  If its raining we will go outside and she will come right back in!!    Your dogs poor belly is probably hurting if she is swollen.  :(

First I would go out with her and if possible go to a tree to protect from some of the rain or anything that you can stand under to protect from the rain.  I think one of the things my dogs hates is when she steps in the grass and her paws get wet! So under a tree the grass may be a bit drier.

When she does go inside at night does she go in the same spot? If she does try putting newspapers or bath towels down in that area to protect your flooring.

  5. Go outside with her. Take her on a leash and she should go. If you can, find an area covered by trees with minimal exposure to the rain. Good Luck.

  6. When my dog was a puppy-- before he realized he loved rain!!-- anytime it rained and it was time for him to go, i grabbed our big umbrella and walked with him outside.  once he realized that the water was not coming down on him as much, he was fine to go.  it took two times ... after that, anytime he saw the umbrella he knew it was time to go outside.  of course, that was when he was 6 months old.  now after a year and a half, he loves running around in the rain!!  probably because i always wrap him up in a towel and scrub him dry before he comes in!!!  :)

  7. Crate her.  The poor pooch will be much less apt to soil a smaller area such as this.  Hence, when the urge becomes too much for her, she'll undoubtedly cry to relieve herself and you can take her directly outside.

Otherwise, you could try taking her out with an umbrella and using a high-pitched, happy tone as you tell her to repeatedly "go potty" and praise her for being outside.  An acquaintance of mine bought her poodle shoes because her dog hated walking in dirt!  Either way, good luck!

  8. Maybe enticing her with a treat. If you go in the rain and offer the treat will she follow you?
