I have a jacket(80%cotton, 20%polyester)...its a bit big for me. how can i shrink it?

Use hot water for washing cycle. It will shrink the cotton.

Put it in the dryer for extended time(like 5minutes more than you need to dry it ) will shrink it, too.  Don't dry it for too long at a time.  You don't want it to shrink too much.

However, these tricks don't guarantee an even shrinking for the whole jacket.  The risk is that for some clothes, the body part may shrink more than the arms.  If you can live without this jacket and money is not an issue, I'd suggest you give it to someone that's a right fit.
