Ok...I am in the US right now and have a job offer at stamford, lincolnshire that is paying me around 45000 GBP per year. I want to know how much I could save (I am married)? It would also be great if you people can suggest a few places online where I can look for apartments in stamford.

  1. You'll be laughing all the way to the bank. U cld probably save around 1000gbp per month. Some people can only dream of earning that sort of money. If yr wife plans to work too, u're sorted!

  2. what kind of job offers £45k per year in the UK? unless you are a brain surgeon or politician? I earn £10k per year,

  3. My parents live about five miles from there.  Nice property isn't cheap, but the area is beautiful.  stamford itself is a very pretty historic market town, and there's several other equally picturesque places to visit in the surrounding area.

How much it'll cost you to live there depends on what sort of lifestyle you're looking for while you're there - renting a flat or cheap house should be fairly easy; if you're looking to buy property, prices are quite high at the moment but there's some utterly amazing places within a stone's throw of stamford or in the town itself available.

however, on a salary like that (it's three times what i'm on, give or take, and I live in an area that's not significantly cheaper) you'll be well able to save if you want to regardless of whether you choose to buy or rent your home.

i'm not sure exactly what £45k works out at after tax, but it's likely to be in the region of £2700 per month.  if you're renting, the rent will be about £300 per bedroom in the property (rough estimate) - varying from £220 to about £400.  mortgage costs if you buy will probably be fairly similar to this, but with a significantly higher upper boundary.

you can live quite easily on £1500 per month including rent, bills and food for two people if you want to, which will leave you around £1200 (over $2.5k) to save - dependent of course on your choice of lifestyle.

my choice of website for property searches, for both rental and buying, is always http://www.rightmove.co.uk

they keep property listings for most of the big national estate agents, and usually several smaller local ones as well, and give you a range of search options.

  4. That's a really great salary for anywhere in the UK, especially outside of London.

I live comfortably on that money in London, and prices in Lincolnshire are much much less than down here.

I've never heard of Stamford in particular - it appears to be a fairly small town and probably won't have much in the way of places to rent. You might have better luck finding a place to live in Peterborough, which is the nearest large town - it's about 10 miles away.

    Good luck!

  5. £45k p.a. ought to buy you a pretty good lifestyle ... how much you could save would very much depend on how much you spend ... I know people who earn that much and are always broke, and others who earn less but save a lot

if you type "estate agents stamford lincs" into google it will pull up the names of the various places operating in that area ... estate agents usually do both sales and lettings ... I'd suggest you browse their websites then get in touch with a few of them and tell them your requirements

  6. An offer of £45,000 pa for a job in Stamford sounds far too good to be true. Stamford is a very small place in the UK, but it is very beautiful.  If it is a genuine offer you should be able to live quite comfortably on that amount of money, though you will be paying tax and National Insurance on it, which would take away around a third of your earnings.

Lincolnshire is one of the cheapest areas in the UK for property...simply because the jobs are not there, so you should be able to pick up a fairly reasonable property of any description especially given that house prices are falling drastically in the UK, and as already given, the Right Move website is very good and you could also try Prime Location.  The website for Stamford itself also has details of property for sale and to let.

Good luck with your move here and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

  7. I lived in London for 3 years on 37000 GBP (just left Feb 08) and I managed to live in a nice neighbourhood (Highbury), shop, eat/drink out regularly and have some short breaks to Europe.  Living in Lincs will be much cheaper than London!

  8. £45,000pa is more than enough for Stamford.

  9. Mate, I'd take the offer. If your wife were to get a job as well you should be able to save aprox 250 pound/week. With the US$ at only a few cents better than the AU$ (similar exchange rate) , That would be aprox. US$ 625 a week in savings. Now that aint bad.
