Question:

I have a killer job, why am I looking for something else?

I was first hired onto this software development firm almost 2 years ago. We were located in an upscale executive office and I was promoted 3 times in a year. It was great, the money was decent and I liked the people I worked with. The experience was definitely what keeps me here. On a daily basis, I am learning new technologies and skills that will only help my resume. About a year ago, our office went virtual and I was allowed to move closer to my family (aka, out of state). I have since then worked from home, got a raise, more responsibility, and did I mention I get to do all of this out of my house?! Its not like one of those scam jobs asking you to work from home, this is a real, techie job that requires a full 8 hour work day and full-on concentration. I am still learning, but I have found myself perusing the job-market on-line more than I'd like. I've been to a couple of interviews and it worries me. Things are good. Yeah, I feel like any day now, I'm going to get laid off, because as of now I'm the only one still 'working from home', but I want to soak it up. Has anybody ever been in this situation, feeling like they are on the verge of getting laid off, but has a killer job at the moment, so they don't want to leave? Help!

  1. I agree with the first answer ask our boss if he feels that he Will have to lay you off soon.  If he says no they him that you really enjoy working with both him and the company and if he feels like he has o lay you off you would appreciate him giving you as much notice as possible.  In addition I would save as much money as I could.  Just a word of encouragement a friend of mine was facing a layoff four years ago.  He went back to school completed his master's and he is still hasn't been layed off.

  2. I think its healthy for you to look and be aware of what is out there as far as employment is concerned. Is your company doing well as far as profits are concerned? If so, what is making you feel like a layoff is on the horizon?

Even if you are laid off, it appears that you have skills that are in demand.

    Good luck!!

  3. Get in their face and ask if you are vulnerable to a layoff.

Either way -start networking and brushing up that resume to fix your next dream job sounds like it can only get better for you.

  4. When an employer asks me during interviews, "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?".. my response is "You can't plan that far ahead now a days. In 5 years you'll go bankrupt or I'll be seeking employment elsewhere. Maybe both!"

You should always be job hunting.

  5. Although you seem to have a great job with much freedom, growth and job promotions you want to grow faster and seek new challenges.  It doesn't hurt to interview and see if there is something better out there for you.

You control your career.  You have a great job but maybe tomorrow you will have an ever greater job.  Many professionals keep their resumes current and the feelers out there.  This is how you will advance.  Good luck!

  6. Just flat out ask your boss.  They may be honest and tell you the truth.
