Question:

I have a kitten question

My 2 kittens are about 15 weeks old, brother and sister. I had them spayed and neutered 2 weeks ago. Anyway my girl kitten has developed loose stools ( kind of a mix between ketchup and pudding consistency ) sorry to be gross! She is not going excessively. I'd say they have been this way for about 4 days. Yesterday I noticed my male kitten is doing the same thing. I have been feeding them the exact same food since I've brought them home (which also happens to be the same canned food my friend who fostered the mother and her kittens were feeding them) I feed them dry food also. The only thing that we can think of that is different since the change in there stools is a new case of cat food.( same kind though ) Could this be the problem possibly? Otherwise they are acting the same, playful, purring, sleeping fine. I don't know whether to worry or not. P.S. They are inside kittens. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  1. You can call your vet's office and I'm sure someone will be happy to speak with you and offer some suggestions.  Your kittens are still quite young and with recent surgery, I would want my vet's opinion.

Good Luck and thanks for neutering!

  2. i am soo sorry to here that. ask ur friend if that happend to her. if not then see a vet. good luck!!! : )

  3. May be a reaction to medication from the surgery.

  4. It might be a good idea to call the vet and ask what they think since it is so soon after the surgery. They can give you suggestions as well.

But one thing I have found is that canned cat food will actually cause diarrhea in cats if it is a primary food source. I would suggest over the next few days cutting it down to where they only get one can of cat food per day between the two of them, but primarily the dry you have been giving them. Do it gradually though. Canned food just tends to have so much fat in them that their little bodies will just pass it on through.

I usually gave my adult kitty one can of the Fancy Feast right before I went to bed in order to help calm him some at night (they aren't quite so active on a full tummy...lol), but that was it. If I gave him more than that one can, he would get diarrhea too. With your kittens being so young, one can split between the two would be plenty of enough of a treat as long as they had their dry kitty chow too.

I hope this helps. I definitely would still call the vet though for any additional suggestions. Good luck.

  5. The symptoms developing together seem to mean that they both have the same problem. Have you had the kittens "wormed" yet? Intestinal worms of many kinds infest kittens and they could both have caught a dose.

If they just came back from the vet you should be able to call that vet and ask for some worming pills--they may require you to bring in stool samples for each kitty. Or the vet may have other ideas.

Diarrhea in small cats is a problem since they don't have much stored energy and can get weak very quickly.

Good luck and check back with your friends here on YA!

  6. It could possibley be the food but go see your vet anyway to be safe. They could have possibly picked up an infection when they were spayed/neutered. And try switching them to a dry food. Wet foods tend to give some kittens diahera.

  7. I'd say if they are playing and don't seem bothered then just wait another couple of days. Kittens and like human babies their body changes.  Don't panic, I'm the same way but I notice when I wait it out they usually turn out to be ok

  8. her cat food could b the problem. u need to get her some kitty food without any animal by products. like "Natural Balance" from Petco.

  9. Two things come to mind as I read your question.  It has been my experience that not every batch of catfood is identical at times.  We were feeding the exact same food, but when a new carton arrived my kitties would not touch it. I discovered that the food they were eating, with gusto I may add was made in the US, while the food they were rejecting was processed in Canada. Go figure. I thought I was crazy but upon calling the company from which I purchased the food, I was told that I was not alone in my complaint, and they wished that they could promise food processed in the US, but they could not.  I bought

3 oz size cans ( of course more costly) and my cats once again were happy campers.  So the batch may be off.

The other thing that occurs to me is that while your kittens were at the veterinarian's office they may have contracted an infection or even picked up a parasite. It can happen.

Food allergies occur with the type of food that are regularly fed.Allergic reactions can develop at any time. Your kittens may have a food allergy to either of these foods. I had a kitten that was highly allergic to any dry food. Once I cut out dry food, her stool returned to normal.

If they were my kittens I would start with a stool sample tested at the vet's to rule out parasites. If that proves negative, discuss the possibility of food allergies with your veterinarian.

But make sure your kittens are not dehydrated!

  10. I noticed you said "cat food"  I heard that if you give them adult food when they are kittens it makes them sick. That's the only thing I can think of but you should probably just call the vet who spayed/neutered them

  11. wet food is known to cause diarrhea in all cats (including kittens). You should call the vet before you change the food though. And keep an eye on them for any other symptoms (especially sneezing).

    Good luck!

  12. The best thing to do is take them to the vet, or call the vet.

Research these things on the internet.

Maybe you should research different kinds of cat food.

I'm no animal expert but you might not want to wait so long. This might become a serious problem. So take the time out of your day and call the vet to make an appointment. The Vet will most likely know exactly what to do.

    hope this helped :)

  13. Bring a stool sample (sorry about being even grosser - lol) to your vet.

  14. It could be the food but just to be on the safe side I would call the vet and ask them, they would most likely know what is wrong, good luck with the babys
